December 07 EHCO Meeting

Thursday, Dec. 20, 6:30pm
Wallace Street Presbyterian Church
The annual EHCO Holiday Gathering / Pitch-in will be held during the December meeting. Once again, Toni Locke and Judy Wilson-Bailey will coordinate and decorate. These women have done a superb job in the past and will no doubt do it again this year. At the November meeting, they will be asking for monetary donations to help with the decorating costs. They are also asking for volunteers to help with the decorating and clean-up.

Residents are encouraged to attend and to bring their favorite dish (with recipe). Last year, there was an assortment of pies, chips/crackers and dips, fruits, candies, and appetizers.

Anyone wishing to help or make a donation should call one of these ladies at 359-0223 (Toni) or 862-6872 (Judy).

IPS Option/Magnet program

Application Deadline is Friday, Dec 14th

A reminder that the deadline for application to IPS option and magnet school program is Friday, December 14th for the 2008-2009 school year. Interested parents should investigate schools and programs early in order to meet the application deadline.

IPS option schools include the very popular Key School, the Center for Inquiry and the Montessori schools. These schools use different teaching methods and parents are encouraged to visit the schools to find the learning environment best suited to their child.

There are also numerous magnet programs in IPS that provide challenging curriculum for students with special aptitudes or interests such as art, math, science, music or technology. If your child has shown an interest or aptitude in a particular area, consider talking with his/her teachers about enrolling in a magnet program. Magnet programs can also help to keep your child engaged in school and learning as they move into middle and high school by presenting them with more challenging material.

More information about the IPS Option / Magnet program, including a list of programs, school performance, and an application may be found under Neighborhood Schools.

Pennsy Trail Meeting

Thursday, 11/29 6:30 pm
Irvington Community School Gymnasium
6705 East Julian Avenue.

This is an important opportunity to show public support for the Pennsy Trail and give public input. We need to demonstrate community support to move this project forward. If you can attend, please do. It’s also an opportunity to see Irvington Community School, a charter school that is available to families in our neighborhood.

The Pennsy is the eastside version of the Monon and is important to our community for the potential economic impact it can have on the area, as well as the physical fitness and recreational benefits. Current plans have the trail connecting to the east edge of Ellenberger Park and on to Cumberland. Cumberland should break ground on their portion of the trail in 2008.

The Pennsy trail connects to the Pleasant Run Trail and then goes south of downtown to Garfield Park.
