For example, if you have a furnace with a pilot light your furnace is about 60% efficient, meaning you are wasting about 40 cents of every heating dollar up the flue! The same is true if you have a standard gas tank water heater. <br /> <br /> The new appliances are much more efficient -- from 82 - 95% of the heat that you pay for ends up in your house instead of up the chimney. However, the new appliances are expensive.
